The BMW E30 is arguably on of the best sports cars of the 1980s. It competed in DTM motor sports in Germany against rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz 190E. The BMW M3 would start a frenzy of German compact sports sedans from other manufactures such as the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 evolution models and Audi S4. Other manufactures around the world would use this first generation M3 as inspiration for future sports coupes. In contrast the E30 is powered by a 4-cylinder engine and future models of the M3 would use inline 6-cylinder engines and now currently the M3 is powered by a V8 engine. When discussing The top sports cars of the 1980s any true automotive enthusiast would include the BMW E30 M3.
